Photography can be art, as painting can be art.

This is more difficult. Using the painting parallel, is the part about visualizing the picture the art part, or the selection of materials and tools, or is it the application of the paint to the canvas? Or is it the result of all of these?

I suggest it's the whole process, rather than one piece of it. Any process can be disected far enough that nothing is left to call art.

For me personally, it's heavily weighted toward the selection of the few slides to use. But that doesn't mean that if I ignored the rest of the processes, selection of tools, materials and models, visualizing, making or choosing the set (or picking up cigarette butts), composing, lighting, etc., I could end up with the photographs that I call my art.

Kinda like chopping a person up finer and finer looking for the soul.
